Yes! More organics have turned up at our workshop. At last we will be spending our time back in the pursuit of the perfect bar of soap. eleni is the most excited because she has bottles of essential oil to make all kinds of things to make smooth ageless skins smell great. So if you have a favorite potion, get your order in. We now have some OK fly spray being made to keep these pesky summer bugs away. Yes we are back. I would Like to thank you all for the compliments on our very snazzy new site. People are always asking us, whats the secret? It’s no secret. It’s WordPress. Yes. It’s as easy to use as Facebook and with a bit of practice they all play well together. Still getting the hang of that bit. If you have not already tried it go to WordPress.com, get a free account and play around. If you enjoy it and get the hang of it and decide to make some money I would recommend hosting it on your own server. Many of you have subscribed to our news page at getaguru in good faith. Only to find us in your trash! Yes your trash! We don’t like that stuff. It’s the state of affairs I’m afraid. So if you have subscribed to us, check your junk mail and please pull us out and “white page” us, whatever that means. Basically mark us so that we don’t keep ending up in the trash. Home made soaps in Tarpon Springs, Florida
Home made soaps have always fascinated us. Our family business has been at the Sponge Docks, Tarpon Springs, Florida since 1934. Our Great Grandfather started the business when he bought himself a small boat and started Sponge diving. After all he was in Florida and loved the Sea. Sponge diving was his way to relax and unwind. Soon he bought a small store to sell his Sponge. For years he sold various bounty pulled direct from the sea. It was not until nearly 40 years later that we started importing Olive oil soap from Greece as it seemed work well with sponge.
What has always interested us as a family are products that are made by hand. More precisely “home made products”. We love folk art and crafts that have been essential to the development of civilization. My Grandfather was a master at making anything from whatever was available. Over what is getting on for 80 years we have always made all kinds of arts and crafts and have had the privilege of working with some incredible characters with amazing talents.
One of our favorite products at the moment is our homemade soap. We make it the same way soap has been made all over the world for hundreds of years. We make the soap in small batches using only the best ingredients; Olive oil, coconut oil, organic palm oil, essential oils to produce the finest scent from around the world.
There is something incredible about making something by hand the same way that our ancestors did. I totally recommend that you find yourself a project, maybe an everyday item and have a go at making it yourself. Go on give it a go. Best wishes GetaGuru.
Why GetaGuru?
A question we get a lot. In 1999 we decided it was time to make some changes in our then 67 year old business. We needed to shake things up a bit and we decided to change our name. I would love to tell you that we sat on top of a mountain for 7 days and 7 nights fasting until a vision hit us like a lightning bolt, but the name came to us as we were driving to Home Depot. We do not think we are Gurus. To us GetaGuru means get a passion. Get something in your life that you love with every fiber of your being and make that your Guru. It can be anything that works for you. This is our philosophy in both business and life.
Little did we know that the internet was about to go nuts with everyone being Gurus. Online a Guru is another word for expert or genius. A go to person for whatever you need. So this is the fascinating story of why we are GetaGuru.com
eleni here-on the way to home depot our first brainstorm was ‘get THE guru’ but something about it didn’t set well. we were sort of wondering ‘which guru is THE guru’ so the alternate option was of course ‘get A guru’ where it took on a totally different vibe & was (more or less) our philosophy on life.

The Perfect soap. basics
Why do so many people think that perfect skin is so complicated? Because it is a billion dollar industry? At getaguru every day we are asked all kinds of technical questions about skin. 99% of the time the biggest hurdle is convincing someone, all soap is not created equal!
There are so many different types of products called soap, that real authentic soap needs a different name. Misleading marketing is probably the biggest enemy of your skin. A lot of people tell us they never use soap on their face but when asked what they mean by soap they really don’t know.
At getaguru we only make ” handmade, cold processed natural olive oil soap, in bar form”. This soap will clean your skin without causing damage or dryness and will be the most important part of your skin care regime. This description should be enough to make sure you get the right soap. However we see every word in this description misused all the time. We all know all the different ways consumers are deliberately mislead. It’s annoying to us and it’s very costly to the consumer.
At getaguru we try to put our product descriptions in plain simple language. We cannot stress enough that step one for perfect skin is get real soap. Good soap that is genuine. If you are at a store and the label on a cheap bar of soap reads”all pure and natural”, read the ingredients. It’s amazing how all natural soap can have a big list of chemicals that most people have never heard of.
Finally, please, save money use real soap and give your skin a good head start. You will be amazed.
